Homemaking Series: Keeping a Home as a Young Woman

Hello everyone! Welcome back! Today’s post is in regards to my recent engagement as well as my upcoming marriage. I haven’t really announced this anyways, but I am engaged and will be getting married in the next 3-ish months.

My fiancé and I already determined that once we have enough money and once I finish school, that I’ll stay at home and be a homemaker while he provides for me and our future family.

If you don’t know, I just turned 19, so I’m going to be getting married very young. Now, because I’m so young, I don’t have a lot of the skills to be a good homemaker. My mother and grandmother have both sheltered me a lot growing up, so being able to take care of myself and my space was never an option for me.

So, in order to combat this, I have decided in the next 3-ish months that I will start to prove to my parents and myself that I am ready to be married and start a family of my own. This plan involves a lot of self-discipline and accountability, so I will work on that this semester as I am staying home and not going to school. This will also help me be able to have an established routine for when I do get married and move in with my husband to be.

So, without further ado, let’s get into how I will housekeep and homemake as a young engaged woman.

Daily

So, to start off, I will be going over my daily routine. This routine involves cleaning, pet care, hobbies, and self-care. I have things separated into morning and evening things as that’s when I can do things the most, however there are a few tasks that I have not designated to morning or evening.

Morning

So, before I begin, this routine is not a schedule. The morning tasks are for anytime before 12, noon.

Of course, the first thing that I’m going to do in the morning is wake up. That’s one thing that definitely needs to happen before I do anything else. Here are the other tasks that I am going to do before 12pm: breakfast, workout, bible time, get ready for the day, make my bed, take my dog on a walk, declutter one area for 10 minutes, clean out my emails, do the FlyLady mission for the day, and work on my upcoming shop.

Throughout the Day

These are the tasks that I plan to do at some point between 12pm and 6pm. I will spend around 10 minutes training my dog (right now, I’m training him to be comfortable with me cutting his nails), study, 10 minutes of detail zone cleaning, and taking out the trash.

Evening

My evening routine will take place between 6pm and 11pm, which is when I go to bed. The tasks that I plan to do in the evening are cleaning the toilets, knitting my boyfriend’s blanket, reading, shining the sinks, sweeping the kitchen floor, folding the blankets on the couch, measuring out the dog’s food for the morning, wiping the counters, taking a shower and getting ready for bed, and tracking my expenses.

Now that’s not all for my newest homemaking routines because of course, I’m also going to have a weekly schedule to keep mine and my family’s space clean. So, let’s get into that.

Weekly

On Mondays, I will focus on the bathrooms. The tasks for this day include really scrubbing the toilets, scrubbing the tubs and showers, wiping down and disinfecting all the counters, sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming all the floors (because our master bathroom does have carpet), wiping down the mirrors, and emptying the trashcans.

On Tuesdays, I will focus on the floors, which includes vacuuming the main floor, and sweeping and mopping any tile.

On Wednesdays, the focus is sheets and towels. This day is more personal as I will not be washing everyone’s sheets and towels, however, I will strip my bed, wash my sheets, wash my towels, remake my bed, and fold the towels. This is so that I will be cleaner and ready to do this when I move in with my fiancé.

On Thursdays, I will focus on decluttering. Right now, I’m working on decluttering my clothing, so that when I live with my fiancé, I won’t have a 500,000 piece wardrobe. However, I also want to declutter most of my books and papers so that I don’t have an overwhelming amount of stuff to bring with me when I move in.

Fridays are my kitchen days. This day I will clean the stovetop, mop the floor, clean the windows, and clean the microwave and toaster ovens. I wish to do this to make life easier for those who cook in the house and so that we all have a pleasant experience when in the kitchen.

On Saturdays, I will be baking and doing my laundry. Usually I work in the late morning and early afternoon on Saturdays, so once I get home, I’ll just throw all of my laundry into the washing machine and then get on to my daily activities before popping it into the dryer. I’ll also try to bake one fun treat for the family to eat throughout the week once the sun goes down so the oven doesn’t roast everyone.

Sundays are my resting days, so I’ve decided to tackle my bedroom. Quite simply, I’ll spend some time decluttering, make my bed all nice, clear off my desk and dresser, and then vacuum before taking the rest of the day to pamper myself.

That’s it for how I’m going to help keep the home as a young woman. I hope you enjoyed and found some inspiration and I’ll see you next week.

xoxo Meghan
